Glasgow 2026 CWG kicks off with an indoor opening ceremony. India sends 124-126 athletes, eyeing medals via Chopra, Chanu amid a leaner 10-sport program

The XXIII Commonwealth Games officially open today, Thursday, 23 July 2026, at Glasgow's Hydro arena — the first time in the Games' history that the opening ceremony is being held entirely indoors. King Charles and Queen Camilla are in attendance, with the King reading the message carried in the King's Baton since the relay began on Commonwealth Day last year.

The ceremony starts at 8:00 PM BST (12:30 AM IST, 24 July), with the athletes' Parade of Nations following at 8:30 PM BST. Musical performances include KT Tunstall, Tom Walker, Callum Beattie, Nina Nesbitt, and others, along with a Red Arrows flypast. Competition proper begins on 24 July and runs through 2 August.

This edition returns to Glasgow just 12 years after the city last hosted the Games in 2014 — a late rescue job after Victoria, Australia, withdrew as host in 2023 over spiralling costs. To keep the Games affordable, organisers have delivered a deliberately "leaner" edition: 10 sports, 215 medal events, four venues, down sharply from the 19–20 sports contested at Birmingham 2022. Around 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories are competing.

The Sports on Offer

Athletics, swimming, track cycling, weightlifting, 3x3 basketball, lawn bowls, netball, artistic gymnastics, judo and boxing form the programme, with integrated para-sport events (para-athletics, para-swimming, para-powerlifting, para-track cycling, and 3x3 wheelchair basketball).

Notably absent: badminton, hockey, cricket, wrestling, shooting, table tennis, rugby sevens and squash — several of India's most reliable medal-winning disciplines over the past few Games.

India's Perspective

India travels to Glasgow with a 124-126 athlete contingent (77 men, 49 women, including para-athletes) — a considerably smaller squad than the 200+ sent to Birmingham in 2022, reflecting the trimmed sport list. Athletics carries the largest share of the team with 32 athletes, followed by boxing (14), judo (14), weightlifting (12), artistic gymnastics (8), lawn bowls (6), track cycling (6) and swimming (5).

The absence of badminton, hockey, table tennis and wrestling will be felt most keenly, as these powered much of India’s 61-medal haul in 2022 (4th overall). India’s medal hopes now rest primarily on athletics, weightlifting, boxing and judo.

Flag and Baton Bearers: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu will carry the Indian flag, while boxer Lovlina Borgohain will carry the ceremonial King’s Baton.

Athletes to Watch

  • Neeraj Chopra (javelin) — Olympic gold (Tokyo 2020) and silver (Paris 2024) medallist, leads the athletics charge despite a season-best of 85.69m (below his 90.23m career best) following injuries. Teammate Rohit Yadav (career-best 87.05m this season) is also a strong gold contender..

  • Mirabai Chanu (weightlifting, 48kg) — Tokyo silver and two-time CWG gold medallist, remains India’s clearest gold favourite despite recent injury concerns. Bindyarani Devi, a Birmingham silver medallist, adds further weightlifting hopes.

  • Tejaswin Shankar (decathlon/high jump) — first Indian to cross the 8,000-point barrier, rated one of India's strongest all-round medal prospects.

  • Lovlina Borgohain (boxing) and Murali Sreeshankar (long jump) are among the other headline names in the squad.

In Action on Day 0 (23 July): Lawn bowls teams (women’s pairs and men’s singles) open India’s campaign.

Schedule Snapshot

  • 23 July — Day 0 (lawn bowls / para bowls) + Opening Ceremony

  • 24 July – 2 August — Main medal competition

  • 2 August — Closing ceremony

Why This Matters Beyond the Medal Table

  1. A "lean Games" template: Glasgow 2026's stripped-down, single-city, existing-venue model may set a precedent for how smaller or financially cautious hosts approach future editions — relevant context for future hosts thinking about cost control.

  2. India's medal strategy pressure-tested: With traditional strongholds excluded, this Games is a real stress test of India's depth in Olympic-core disciplines (athletics, weightlifting, boxing, judo) ahead of LA 2028.

  3. Ahmedabad 2030 watch: India’s performance and Glasgow’s efficient approach will shape planning for the next edition on home soil.
